In the installation and application of ceramic tiles, many defects that appear later—such as color variations, misaligned joints, floor slipperiness, or premature surface deterioration—stem from neglecting the foundational principles of tile selection and installation. These principles are not complex; however, ignoring them can seriously compromise the final result in terms of aesthetics, durability, and safety.
This guide provides a clear, technical framework to ensure all key factors from shade and caliber to wear resistance, friction coefficients, and the necessity of dry layout are addressed accurately. Adherence to these guidelines not only guarantees quality but also prevents material waste and future operational issues.
1. What is Tile Shade, and Why Should Cartons Be Separated?
“Shade” refers to the subtle color variations between different production batches of a tile. It is not an obvious difference, but rather a nuance that becomes apparent when tiles from different batches are placed side-by-side. This variation occurs naturally during the firing process and the blending of raw materials; it is inherent in all brands.
Shade on Packaging: Indicated by two Latin letters in the “SHADE” section (e.g., AA, AB, BA).
2. How to Manage Shade in Large Projects?
Fundamental Principle
Tiles with different shades must never be installed in the same continuous space, as this results in visible color bands or uneven blocks after installation.
Planning for Large Projects
For large-scale projects or multi-unit buildings, receiving multiple shades is often inevitable. To avoid material waste
· Define the precise dimensions of each space before starting installation.
· Match the quantity of each shade to specific areas so that each shade covers one or more complete areas.
· Avoid allocating the remainder of two different shades to a single room (e.g., a living area).
Recommendation: Prioritize larger spaces with the highest-volume shade, then use the remainder for smaller areas.
3. What is Tile Caliber?
Caliber refers to the actual size of the tile after firing, which may vary slightly from the nominal size.
Caliber on Packaging: Indicated by a one or two-digit number (e.g., 8, 9, 10).
Tiles with different calibers must not be installed together; otherwise, the size difference will lead to irregular grout joints and compromise the aesthetics of the finished surface.
Based on the points above, it is essential in every project to install tiles that share both the same shade and the same caliber.
4. Why is “Zero-Grout” Installation Not Recommended?
The use of grout joints is a technical necessity for tile installation, even for rectified tiles. “Zero-grout” installation is strictly not recommended.
Functions of Proper Grouting:
· Control of minor dimensional tolerances.
· Creating visual order and uniformity.
· Reducing the risk of edge chipping.
· Increasing overall durability and execution quality.
Important Note:
Grout is not designed to absorb structural movement or primary thermal expansion/contraction. This is the role of Expansion Joints, not standard grout.

For high-traffic floors, selecting a tile with appropriate wear resistance is essential. Neglecting this will cause the surface to dull or wear down over time. Choose the wear class based on traffic volume:

· PEI 3: Medium-traffic floors.
· PEI 4: Commercial and high-traffic floors.
Note: Surface erosion is caused by both traffic volume and abrasive agents. For example, outdoor floors may experience faster erosion than indoor floors due to grit, sand, or gravel trapped in shoe soles.
Chemical Resistance
For industrial kitchens, food processing plants, chemical warehouses, battery rooms, or any area in direct or indirect contact with chemicals (including frequent cleaning with high-concentration detergents), tiles with high chemical resistance must be selected.
6. How Does the Coefficient of Friction Affect Safety?
Surface slipperiness is a critical safety criterion. It is essential to evaluate friction levels based on the user profile, whether the floor is wet or dry, the usage type, and any factors that increase the risk of slipping.
· For dry indoor spaces, a friction class of 2 or R9 is the minimum recommendation.
· For wet areas (e.g., pool sides) and outdoor spaces, non-slip tiles are recommended.
· In high-risk areas (elderly care, children’s facilities, hospitals), higher friction coefficients are preferred.
Note: Increasing the surface friction coefficient usually results in a relatively rougher tile surface.
7. Why is Dry Layout Essential Before Installation?
Before applying adhesive, lay out the tiles on the floor to:
· Observe the graphic and pattern design in real scale—especially for veined, wood-look, or geometric tiles.
· Determine the optimal orientation for each tile (a 90 or 180-degree rotation can sometimes make a significant difference).
· Identify and avoid unintended pattern repetition by rearranging tiles.
· Predict end-cuts to prevent placing very small pieces in visible edges.
· Evaluate potential shade differences under the space’s natural light.
Recommendation: Perform the dry layout in daylight and within the actual installation space, not in a warehouse or corridor; ambient light has a direct impact on color and pattern perception.
Final Pre-Installation Checklist:

o The quantity of each shade has been matched to the specific space.
